The Rankin County Board of Supervisors has granted a property tax exemption to a building used by Primary Purpose Club Incorporated, a local Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group. The decision, made on October 15, ensures the group can continue holding meetings without financial strain from property taxes.
Background and Purpose
During the board’s hearing, the property owner—who also represents the Primary Purpose Club—explained that the building is exclusively dedicated to AA meetings. The applicant emphasized that no rent is charged and that all funds collected come solely from member contributions, which are used to pay for utilities and basic supplies.
“This building is used only for Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Everything given is voluntary and goes directly toward keeping the lights on and providing supplies,” the applicant stated.
Financial Need and Justification
The applicant informed the supervisors that the group lacks the financial capacity to pay property taxes through its current contributions. He requested the board’s support and understanding so that the meetings, which play a crucial role in supporting individuals in recovery, could continue without interruption.
When asked whether any other activities or businesses operated from the building, the applicant clarified that it is solely utilized by the Primary Purpose Group and does not serve any commercial purpose.
Board Decision and Next Steps
Following the discussion, Supervisor Jay proposed granting the exemption, and Supervisor Steve seconded the motion. The Board of Supervisors approved the request through a voice vote.
No special conditions or restrictions were attached to the exemption during the hearing. After approval, the Tax Assessor’s Office was instructed to finalize the exemption paperwork, completing the administrative process.
This exemption officially applies to the parcel occupied by the Primary Purpose Club and takes effect immediately upon authorization by the board.
