A Gulfport High School senior, Crosby Parker, recently took charge of a unique community service project that connected students with professionals from the Coast Electric Power Association. The event took place in October as part of National Cooperative Month, aiming to help young learners understand the importance of community-powered services.
Inspiring Visit at West Elementary
For this initiative, Parker organized a special visit at West Elementary School, where Coast Electric linemen met with students. During the visit, the linemen demonstrated how their work helps supply power across Mississippi’s Gulf Coast communities. They discussed safety, teamwork, and the importance of electricity in daily life, giving children a hands-on learning experience about local infrastructure.
Role in National Youth Leadership Council
Crosby Parker represents Mississippi on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Leadership Council. In this role, he focuses on promoting leadership, education, and community engagement among young people. The project at West Elementary was one of his key contributions, showcasing his dedication to bringing practical knowledge to the next generation and strengthening ties between students and community workers.
Encouraging Youth Involvement in Community Service
Through this program, Parker not only fulfilled his leadership responsibilities but also inspired his peers to take part in service-oriented initiatives. The event highlighted how local youth can contribute to their community’s development while learning about vital services like electricity distribution and rural cooperative values.
